I’ve finally decided to make myself learn to play the guitar. I’ve been meaning to do this for ages but never got around to it. I’ve got about 3 books on learning to play the guitar and a dvd or two.. But they all say slightly different things about starting.. Where would you say is a good way to start and where to go from there?

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lesson on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

I just bought a music book for my girlfriend because I thought it would be fun for us to play music together (her on the piano, and me on the guitar).

However, I don’t understand how am I suppose to play the guitar part from the book…

I see the chords on top of the staves, but does that mean, for guitar, they only expect you to do strumming with chords?

So how do you play the guitar part in these kind of music books?
A perfect example is the song "Here come the sun" by the Beatles.

Like it has that little de-da-da-duh part..

so I just play the chords?

Finger the chord shapes shown and arrpegiate them. That means to pick the notes separately. It makes it easier to play it this way. "Here Comes The Sun" is a very good song to play this way, because it’s the way it was written. 90 % of my music is, like your’s, "piano, vocal, guitar". The music is just a publishing companies interpretation of the song, not a note-for-note transcription of what the artist wrote. They didn’t even play the songs the same way themselves two times in a row, it was all handled in the mixing room. George Harrison was a very accomplished musician and his passing was a sad day, indeed.

I’ve been wanting to learn how to play guitar for the longest time, and I have a guitar because my brother plays. He also has a tab book that teaches the fingerings. Would it be difficult to teach myself that way without a proper guitar teacher? I can read music because I play piano as well, but I just need some advice on this…
And if you know of any websites that would be helpful for this, please give them to me. That would be great. Thanks!

a DVD is ur best bet. they talk you thru it where as with a book u have to understand it by urself. definately try the dvd first then if that doesnt work try the book.

I recently purchased an acoustic guitar, and I am starting to learn how to play. I was told that Mel Bay books are excellent for beginners who are just learning to play. Do you recommend any other books? If you have any other advice for a beginner like me who is just starting to play, please don’t hesitate to include that information in your answer. Thanks in advance! I will choose a best answer.

Mel Bay, Hal Leonard (HLP), and Warner Bros. all make good products. There’s not a huge difference between them. My advice is to purchase Elixir brand or Dean Markeley Alchemy brand teflon coated strings, and as soon as possible. You have to wear out the teflon before the strings die, and since you don’t have callouses yet, they will improve your endurance before your hands quit/bleed.
I know they cost more, but last 3x as long – saving you the gas of driving 3 times, and buying 2 more sets of strings.
You should also get a gripped pick – Gator grip Dunlop or at least chaulking picks if you sweat at all. The nylon grips don’t help as much.
Don’t buy a string capo when you want one (and you will), get a Kyser or Dunlop trigger capo. They don’t wear out elastically, and if not abused can last 20-30 years.
Finally, if you ever get frustrated with things like fret buzz and uncomfortable neck, make sure to try other guitars before you get so mad you think about giving up. If you hit a specific rut, ask another question about it – or hit my blog below and comment.
When you get more advanced, I have lots more.

Hey woundering what are some good books to learn how to play gutiar… trying to learn theroy, scales, chords and what not and i know about youtube and free lessons online im just more of a sit with a book and do it that way person….
my main intrest of music is rock,punk,metal so books that are more geared towards that will be helpfull…
