Throughout prehistory and history, the first person to invent a new musical instrument was probably the one who figured out how to play it and taught others.

I am 18 years old, and was recently cast as a 24 year old science teacher in a play. I understand that costuming and presentation will help me appear older, but are there any tips on how to use makeup or other appearance changes to look older? Right now I have fairly short hair, above my ears but still long enough to style or cut. I wear glasses or contacts, and i don’t know which makes me look older.
Any advice on how to look six years older?
I am a guy, and I cannot grow full facial hair, its not in my genes.

There’s not enough age difference for you to have to change makeup. You may want to comb and part your hair, or something else that looks "professional," rather than looking like you just rolled out of bed. Glasses or contacts doesn’t matter, but you should probably stick with contacts. Glasses can reflect the lights and make it harder to see your expressions (check with your director on glasses/contacts).

Most of the "age" is going to come from your costume and the way you carry yourself. Sounds like costume is covered. For presentation, just remember who you are. 24 is still young, but you’ve been around the block a couple more times than an 18-year-old. Most importantly, you’ve learned how to behave differently around different people. You may still be able to party it up with your friends, but you know that when you’re at your job, you need to be well-behaved, straight-laced, and professional. And you’re good at that, but maybe still young enough to get rattled when you venture into new territory.

Also, the way you interact with the other characters will matter. If the other characters are all adults, especially older than your character, then you definitely don’t need to worry about age. If you’re in contact with, say, your students, then it’s different. Do you want to make sure they learn what they need? Do you envy their youth, that you recently lost? Are you happy to have power over them that you didn’t have when you were in school? Just know who you are–your age will come from that.

I love to play piano and have gone through three piano teachers! Now Im at a point where I want to learn a specific type of music and Ive really started to get into jazz and even some ragtime music as well. I have only the VERY VERY BASICS and ability to improvise. What are some suggestions that you have to learn to play and improvise jazz music? Thank you Soooo much!

1. Start with blues. Look it up online and solo using the blues scale. It is the easiest for solo improvising.

2. Then, start learning the ii7 – V7 – Imaj7 chord progression. You should be able to find more help online for this. You should be able to play the chords and solo over them in any key.

3. Then, get a fake book (The Real Book is a great one) and try to learn some songs.

You’ll need some help figuring out how to voice chords and what scales to use for improv. You can find some of this online at places like learnjazzpiano.com. Beginner jazz improv books are also helpful. However, I would really suggest getting a jazz piano teacher. That would be the best. They can be hard to find, but it would really be worth it. Make sure you are listening to jazz a lot. If you hear some things you like, sit down and try to figure it out.

That is jazz piano in a nutshell. There is so much more that should be said (that is why I suggest finding a teacher).

Good luck!

I can act, sing, dance and play the violin. She can do pretty much all of those things except the violin part, but she needs a bit more time learning routines, songs, and lines. The event is on Wednesday, and we were thinking of doing a dance routine or two with some other girls that can also do those things (except the violin), but there’s already a cheer squad. I really want to do something, and she does as well, and I don’t think it would be very fair if we let the others girls down by saying they won’t be involved. Are there things that you guys can think of that might be appropriate for us to do? Please, serious answers only.

That would be cool. Do a song medley (kind of like a dance team or cheer squad would do). Don’t sing, just lip the words and dance. Make sure it is very upbeat!!! You might want to use popular songs from a few years ago.

That goes for English, Science teachers not just Music, PE or Drama teachers. To give them a duty to monitor children during after school rehearsals and dressing rooms and even on weekends. Is this normal?

Check your contract. Most contracts specify the days and hours of the week that are required for work. Most public school unions wouldn’t include any stipulations that you randomly be assigned to monitor after school rehearsals (unless the kids get out at 3pm and your work day doesn’t end until 4pm or something, in which case it isn’t surprising) and it would be pretty surprising if they required your participation on Sundays. When I was in the NYC teaching union, people basically walked out if a meeting went past the time that they were required to stay according to their contract. We NEVER had to come in on a weekend.

If you aren’t part of a union, though, there might be something that says "And other extracurricular duties as required…." or something that might cover this kind of thing. I teach at a private school now, and it isn’t unusual for weekend activities to be scheduled that I need to rearrange my schedule for. If you are at a non-union school, contact your principal and let them know that you don’t feel comfortable with the additional requirements. If you are at a union school, check your contract and then talk to your union rep.

Sorry the video cut out at the end, YouTube only lets me post 10 min : (

Lyrics:

The stars lean down to kiss you,
And I lie awake I miss you.
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere.
‘Cause I’ll doze off safe and soundly,
But I’ll miss your arms around me.
I’d send a postcard to you dear,
‘Cause I wish you were here.

I watch the night turn light blue.
But it’s not the same without you,
Because it takes two to whisper quietly,
The silence isn’t so bad,
Till I look at my hands and feel sad,
‘Cause the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly.

I’ll find repose in new ways,
Though I haven’t slept in two days,
‘Cause cold nostalgia chills me to the bone.
But drenched in Vanilla twilight,
I’ll sit on the front porch all night,
Waist deep in thought because when I think of you.
I don’t feel so alone.
I don’t feel so alone.
I don’t feel so alone.

As many times as I blink I’ll think of you… tonight.
I’ll think of you tonight.

When violet eyes get brighter,
And heavy wings grow lighter,
I’ll taste the sky and feel alive again.
And I’ll forget the world that I knew,
But I swear I won’t forget you,
Oh if my voice could reach back through the past,
I’d whisper in your ear,
Oh darling I wish you were here.
