do you think its possible to learn to play violin without actually having lessons
i know of some people who have learned instruments with books like guitars so is it possible? also, are there any good books for beginners to learn without lessons?

It’s possible. You can learn anything if you really try hard. I wouldn’t recommend doing that though. If you really want to be good at it, you’re going to need a teacher. If you just learn it on your own, you’re going to develop bad habits and bad technique without even knowing what you’re doing wrong. A teacher is definitely the best choice. Good luck.

What I learnt this month from Prof. Michael Hegeman (October 2009). Note from Prof. Hegeman: Dimitri has been practising really hard to improve his playing. He has changed his violin and bow hold and improved his intonation. He has a professional attitude towards playing and has shown great progress. Well done!

Technique books used:
Otakar Ševčík, Violin Studies (ISMN: M2016 4067 9).
Carl Flesch, The Scale System (ISMN: M-013-00009-8).

Those of you who have had children take lessons, do you think it helped your children’s development? Was it worth the time & effort? Why or why not?

I played music from the Suzuki Cello book.

It’s really, really good.

An introduction to the plucking of the string, called pizzicato. Both right hand and left hand pizzicato are addressed.

I am interested in learning the violin again. I played for four years in elementary and middle school but did not play in high school. It has been seven years since I touched one! My question is: where can I find lessons for adults in Billings, MT?
I’ve looked online but I’ve had no luck in finding anything.

Call up music stores in the area and see if they know of anyone giving violin lessons. Other possible sources for information are the Billings Symphony (link below) and the orchestra programs at the high schools. Obviously you won’t just be able to join the symphony or a high school orchestra, but someone in one of those places should know where you can take lessons. Good luck!

i was considering taking violin lessons there because their lessons price were much cheaper. 20-25 dollars for each half hour.

have anyone ever been taught there?
is it a good idea?

You’re making me miss my New England roots.

It looks like a good deal. Marie Rawlings, would be your instructor, she is active in the Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Orchestra.

… and another kudos for choosing to take lessons rather than "DIY violin."

There are no violin teachers in my area, I have searched time and again. So it seems that learning violin online is my best option. I really want to learn to play the violin. Can anybody please tell me what to do?

I assume from your question that you are wanting beginner level instruction for the violin. So I will introduce you to the online course I recommend for my beginner students.

Eric Lewis has a very good collection of online videos that cover comprehensive methods starting at the beginning level and progressing to intermediate levels and beyond. It starts with reading sheet music and is a rock solid, tested course that has been teaching violin students since 1988.

BTW, Eric Lewis is 1st violinist for the Manhattan String Quartet and has been a world renown master violinist for decades. He has pioneered many of the most successful teaching methods for learning the violin, which are widely used today. You can access his online video course here:
