These two issue decide the vote for many people. As the Democrats know enough not to do anything stupid at this time, they will not be a major factor. The Democrats learned the last time that they did strong gun control under Clinton, and then saw their position destroyed.

Those people that have strong opinions will vote to support their base. The Republicans can count on the pro gun vote, and the anti abortion vote. The Democrats can count on the anti gun vote, and the pro abortion vote.

The deciding factor in the 2010 election will be the rampant government failure to deal with the recession. The Democrats will loose control of both the House and Senate. In all likelihood, they will loose the Presidency in 2012. Realize that if the Republicans take control of the House and Senate in 2010, the entire Obama / Acorn / voter fraud thing from the 2008 election will come under Congressional scrutiny. There will be hearings, and many people will go to jail. There is even a slight chance that Obama will end up impeached and in jail, the issue being his legal ability to be President.

I would never vote for a candidate who didn't have the support of the NRA, no matter what other issues are on the table. So in my opinion, issues like Abortion and Gun Control will not play second fiddle to other issues, such as the war or economy.

Abortion control has always been a wedge issue that the conservative party uses to draw votes from the more liberal party. Gun control will also be used by the conservative party to steal votes from the Obama supporters. Unfortunately, the debate on these issues will take priority and just distract the voters from their more pressing issues that the politicians will not want to discuss. Oh yes... We must not forget to add better campaign reforms to this list of issues that will be debated, but not addressed after the votes have been counted.

You are correct. What is going to be an issue in the 2010 election is the $3,800 tax increase (excuse me, insurance premium) that Obama is going to stick on everyone. Do not know about you but I have excellent insurance and I do not need to pay another $3,800 for the same insurance.

The government has no business legislating the private acts and decisions of the population. Abortion,gay rights, marijuana etc. They need to get back to the business of actual governing. I feel much of this has to do with those who would love to see the U.S. turned into a theocracy.

As long as Obama wants to fund abortions with Federal Tax money, it will be an issue–BTW–we already fund abortions with Federal Tax money by funding them in other countries–see Obama’s first executive order.

Abortion and gun control are, in fact, dead issues, and still people refuse to vote for candidates who uphold opposing views. Abortion and guns are legal, and they're going to stay that way.
