I was in a production of "Treasure Island" several years ago, and the actor who played Long John Silver made his peg leg by cutting off an old table leg which was shaped about right. He glued a padded board to the top to cushion his knee. Under the padded board were two long ropes he tied over his shoulder to hold on the wooden peg leg. He bound his bent leg back with two belts, then had an assistant help him into his baggy white pants with one leg of the pants cut off just below the knee. The bent back leg was covered by his pants and billowing overcoat.
It was very effective and cheap to make, but understandably uncomfortable.
