Learning to play this and other songs by Steely Dan has really broadened my horizons as a drummer. Although this is not a complicated song, the groove is definitely one worth learning, as the skills I have picked up in the process apply to lots of other music I play.

just thought id point out it wasnt gadd who sessioned this track he only played on the song aja. It was actually rick morotta who contributed the funky groove that is peg.
I’m working on it;) …
I’m working on it;). my recording devices are not very good. The difference between toms and the toms and the snare are very hard to hear. And btw I just read that the drums in this song is done by Rick Marotta (neverd heard of him). I’ll try to do the best i can. Im not very good at this beat.
Okay, completely …
Okay, completely accurate, perhaps not, but totally wrong? Come on! Actually the hihat is not true to the original (more notes than Gadd played). I would be interested to see what your take on it is. Perhaps you can post a chart, or a cover of your own?
One problem. You …
One problem. You say the groove is easy to learn but your base is totaly whrong compared to the original. Your hi-hat and snare is good but the rest is not.

Controlled, and I enjoyed it all the more for that – thank you.

Not at all! I used a little digital still cameral with video capabilities and one of those mini table-top tripods. I rigged it to an AC vent in the ceiling with a little coat-hanger wire and a heavy-duty rubber band. I plugged in into a cheap TV to frame the shot, and I was set!

i bet it took a heck of a lot of work to get the camara up there!

Nice touch Stick! Solid approach on the Roland! Keep jammin’ man!
Only thing baotu …
Only thing baotu those electronic kits is that I can barely hear your “ghost” note (work)on the snare.
And the hats need to be a little more open. The slightly open hat’s is the part of the kit that control’s the groove of the whole song. Which I’m sure is a limit on the electronic drum setting’s?
Other than that…good groove, solid!
It would sound better with natural resonance that only an acoustic kit can provide.
I have an air …
I have an air conditioning vent just above my kit. I made a hook out of coat hangar wire and took one of those miniature table-top tripods, wrapped a big rubber band around the neck of it several times, and put the end of it around the hook. This way it holds the tripod to the AC vent. Then I just attach the camera. I hook it up to a small TV so I can aim it properly, and away I go!

Thanks! I look forward to the day I find $500 laying around so I can get the upgrade card for the TD20. I hear the hihat response is much improved.
Nice job, Stick! I …
Nice job, Stick! I saw an interview with Rick Marotta, the drummer who played on this track. He talks about the little hi-hat lift, how he’d played it elsewhere but that the Aja engineers were the first to actually capture it. Interesting.
Peg was one of the first songs I learned when I began drum lessons in the 80s.
Totally agree you hear new stuff each time you listen to Aja’s drum tracks.

Steely Dan’s stuff sound simple until you actually try to play it. For me, every time I turn around I hear something I didn’t hear before.
Really nice job …
Really nice job here! I learned how to play the drums from sitting playing to all my Steely Dan favorites. You can really hold a solid groove man!
