It sounds like your broken string was a Thomastik Dominant. The thin string is probably steel. It wouldn’t hurt your violin, but will sound different.

gud pm prof V, i have a question my violin string broke[ i's the A string] what brand is that A string in your violin..it’s the same thicknes as my A string…went to a store but gave me a diff kind/brabd the one they sold me ..the A string is too thin..i have a very old violin,,i’m afraid it will harm it if I use this less expensive A string..the A string that i broke is thicker kind with a purple color at the end..please help…thank you so much.
