What are a few good ways to make money playing the violin?

by admin on December 7, 2009

I am 19 years old and I have been playing the violin for 13 years, I have a job right now, but have recently been interested in playing publicly for some extra income. If anyone could pitch in an idea or two on where I could play or places to start, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank You

You could advertise (or just spread the word among friends and relatives) that you’re available to play for weddings, parties, anniversaries, etc… It would be cheaper for people to hire a single person than an ensemble or whole orchestra.
A more stable source of income would be giving lessons. You could contact the orchestra conductors for local middle schools and high schools and ask about giving personal lessons to the students.

show up at open-mics and play some solo pieces. ya might meet other musicians who are giiging there and u may start gigging with them. Another gig might be as a trolling violinist in a restraunt or bistro. Of course there’s always playing on the street of your downtown area. Sometimes you can make a nice bit of cash and its great live-performance practice.Ya just never know who might be walking down that sidewalk that day…many great acts have started out in this humble way…good luck to ya.

I’m basing this answer on personal experience from being a professional guitarist for 20+ years.
